Annual Report

Extract from the 2008 / 2009 Annual Report and Business Plan

Introduction from Chair of the North Somerset Safeguarding Children Board

The past year has been dominated by the tragic death of baby Peter and the consequences for safeguarding policy and management in England.

We are currently awaiting the publication of the revised Working Together that will provide new multi agency policy and procedural guidance based on the learning from the baby Peter case and Lord Laming's Review.

In this same period we have undertaken Serious Case Reviews (SCRs) to review cases of child death and serious injury here in North Somerset.  OfSTED have reviewed both SCRs and assessed them as being 'good'.

The learning from both these cases is being taken forward by all agencies to ensure we better protect and safeguard all children and young people in the future.

We have experienced an increase in the number of safeguarding referrals and an increase in the number of children and young people who are subject to a child protection plan.  This will be a major challenge as we move into 2010 and will need further consideration by the North Somerset Safeguarding Children's Board (NSSCB) and the North Somerset Children's Trust.
