Managing Allegations

In line with all Local Authorities, North Somerset follows the National Procedure for dealing with allegations against people who, through their role as an employee or volunteer, comes into contact with children.

Allegations may be made about anyone who comes into contact with children through their role as an employee, volunteer, casual or agency staff member or self-employed worker and are investigated by the LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer).

It must be used where there are concerns about the behaviour of a person who works with children.

The procedure is a Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) requirement under the statutory guidance section of its Working Together to Safeguard Children publication.

The procedure covers the following types of allegations where a person has:

  • Behaved in a way which has harmed or may have harmed a child or young person under the age of 18 years.
  • Behaved towards a child or young person in a way which indicates that they are unsuitable to work with children
  • Possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child or young person.

Our existing Child Protection Procedures have not changed and if you have reason to believe a child is suffering or likely to suffer harm you should refer this to our Child Protection Team or the Police.
